Progestogens are agonists of the progesterone receptor, the typical progestogen is progesterone. Progestins are synthetic progestogens, some examples include cyproterone acetate, medroxyprogesterone acetate, and norethisterone.

Comparison of progestogens

Many progestins have off-target biological action (e.g., binding to the androgen receptor or glucocorticoid receptor). This means that studies discussing one progestogen do not necessarily readily apply to another progestogen.
